International Tax Summit: New York

September 16, 2025, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. EDT

The International Tax Pros community is holding another in-person meet-up, this time in New York and simulcast on Zoom. We hope you can join us, especially in person in Manhattan.

There will be three hours of CPE/CE credit available, then a bit of party time at a nearby restaurant/bar, all included in the ticket price. Get smart, then get happy. The international tax community is small, so why not meet people like you?

The New York State Society of CPAs is graciously providing its facilities and technical infrastructure for a three-hour CPE event at their facilities in Manhattan, as well as livestreaming the event for people who cannot attend in person.

Agenda

Pre-Expatriation Tax Planning to Minimize Exit Tax

Debra Rudd, CPA (HodgenLaw PC, Pasadena, California)

Assisting clients with renouncing their U.S. citizenship or terminating long-term residency requires navigating the treacherous waters of the IRC §877A “exit tax.” This session provides a strategic framework for advisors to help clients plan before they expatriate, potentially saving them from significant tax liabilities.

Foreign Trusts: Navigating Reporting and Compliance Challenges

Bruna Barbosa (Mayer Brown, New York, New York)

The compliance and reporting regime for foreign trusts remains one of the most complex areas of international tax, with severe penalties for non-compliance. This session will provide a crucial update on the current enforcement environment, recent developments, and best practices for ensuring your clients meet their obligations.

CFCs After the One Big Beautiful Bill Act

Philip D. W. Hodgen (HodgenLaw PC, Pasadena, California)

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 7024) made a number of changes for international tax compliance, with significant updates to the attribution rules–directly affecting who files Form 5471. Most changes are effective for tax years beginning in 2026, so proactive planning is essential. This session will tell you what happened and give you actionable steps for you and your clients in 2026.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this session, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the critical tests for determining “Covered Expatriate” status and strategies to avoid it.
  • Understand how the Internal Revenue Code classifies foreign trusts, so you can advise trustees and beneficiaries of the U.S. tax consequences.
  • Analyze the OBBBA’s provisions that apply to CFCs and their U.S. shareholders, and how they impact Form 5471 filing requirements.
